Presidents Can Declassify Documents ‘by Thinking About It’ — Doesn’t Have to Be a Process

Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday on FNC’s Hannity that a President of the United States can release any documents without a trial.

Hannity said, “A president has the power to declassify.”

Trump said, “Right.”

Hannity said: “You have said on Truth Social several times that you have approved the classification.”

Trump said, “I released yes.”

Hannity asked, “What was your approval process like?”

Trump replied: “As I understand it, there doesn’t have to be a trial. You know there are different people saying different things. As far as I know, it doesn’t have to be. If you are the President of the United States, you can declassify the classification simply by saying, “It is declassified.” Even if you think about it. Because you send it to Mar-a-Lago or wherever you send it. It doesn’t have to be a process. There can be a process, but there doesn’t have to be. You are the President. You make that decision. So if you send it, it will be released. I released everything.”

He added, “I would say there is a very good chance many of these documents will never be seen again.”

Trump added: “They were spying on my campaign, so why did they come in and do that? Especially since we had such great conversations.”
