prey is the best thing that happened to it predator Franchised since the original film, but it can also stand on its own as a gripping battle between a local woman trying to prove herself and a technologically advanced alien.
There are no spoilers in this review of the Hulu movie Prey (2022).
It’s safe to say prey (2022) is not where anyone expected it to be predator franchise next to go. The latest installment in the series started by Jim Thomas and John Thomas serves as a prequel to the other four films. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Patrick Alson, Hulu’s prey is set on the northern Great Plains in 1719, when a young woman from the Comanche nation confronts an early version of the alien Predator (Dane DiLiegro).
Naru (Amber Midthunder) is a young and talented woman determined to prove herself as a warrior to the men of her tribe who doubt her abilities, including her other brother, Taabe (Dakota Beavers). While out hunting one day, she thinks she saw a Thunderbird approaching in the sky – but she really saw a Predator ship. She joins a group of hunters pursuing a missing warrior who was attacked by a mountain lion.
Out in the forest, Naru is convinced that something more sinister than a mountain lion is lurking there. The film does a great job of building suspense as she tries to hunt down what the audience knows is the highly dangerous Predator. She and her brother are both eventually captured by French traders, creating another dangerous alien invasion of their country.
Midthunder is an excellent protagonist, both vulnerable and skilled enough to constantly engage the audience. The action sequences are impressive and varied, from battles against the wild – including a bear, a wolf and a mud pit – to battles against the monster itself. There’s certainly no shortage of blood, and the Predator’s advanced technology is even more frightening in comparison to the simpler weapons of the Comanches.
It’s the sensitive and detailed portrayal of the Comanche nation that perishes prey apart from most other films of its genre. Producer Jhane Myers is herself a member of the Comanche nation and has certainly helped ensure an accurate portrayal of their way of life. From the dress to the food preparation to the body painting, every detail was taken care of. Costume designer Stephanie Porter and makeup manager Samantha Rumball ensured the imagery was based on truth (and certainly practicality for filming action scenes) and not stereotypes.
In addition to this dignified portrayal of the Comanche people, the filmmakers have created a Comanche-language dub of the film, available on Hulu. They eventually settled on English for the main version of the film, but also wanted a way to watch it in the language the characters would have used. It’s an impressive and commendable step toward representation, and well worth watching in the Comanche language (with English subtitles).
By setting the prequel three hundred years before the original film, prey escapes many of the problems with franchise films. There are no cheesy attempts to monetize nostalgia, although there are plenty of nods for fans of the previous films. However, it’s equally watchable for someone with no experience of the franchise at all. prey is not only one of the strongest action films of 2022 yet, but also the best offering in the Predator franchise since the original film.
