Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Return to California After Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral

Prince Harry and Megan Markle finally headed home to California this week after Queen Elizabeth’s death extended her overseas visit.

The royal couple flew home from Britain on Tuesday after their mourning period and a day after attending the funeral service for the late monarch. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex happened to be in Europe at the time of their deaths as they were on a planned overseas trip to attend a number of events in support of the charities they work with including the One Young World Summit and the lead celebrations for the Invictus Games taking place in Düsseldorf next year. When the Queen suddenly fell ill, Harry was able to rush from Scotland to be with the rest of his family. He and Meghan then stayed until Monday to attend the state funeral and surrender service ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s private funeral. In the run-up to the funeral, the Sussexes also attended a number of events commemorating the monarch. On September 10th they joined Prince William and Kate Middleton In greeting, mourners and well-wishers gathered outside Windsor Castle to share their memories of the late King.

In his first statement about his grandmother, published on the Archewell website after her death, Harry highlighted the Queen’s commitment to serving the UK, writing: “Celebrating the life of my grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen – and mourn her loss, all are reminded of the compass she was to so many in their commitment to service and duty. She was admired and respected worldwide. Her unwavering grace and dignity remained true throughout her life and now her eternal legacy.” He also added a personal note: “Grandma, while this final goodbye brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings — of my earliest childhood memories with you to my first meeting as my commander. In Chief, until the moment you met my beloved wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren. I cherish those times I’ve shared with you and the many other special moments in between. You are already greatly missed, not just by us, but by the whole world.” Harry concluded, “Thank you for your dedication to the ministry. Thank you for your sound advice. Thank you for your contagious smile. We too are smiling knowing that you and grandpa are now reunited and both in peace together.”

During this extended trip, Harry and Meghan left behind their two children, aged 3 Archie and 1 year old Lilibetat home in Montecito with the Duchess’ mother, Doria Ragland. The couple have lived in the ritzy California neighborhood popular with celebrities since 2020, when they officially stepped down from their positions as senior royals.
