Princess Märtha Louise Will Step Down From Royal Duties After Wedding to Durek Vivett

earlier this year, Princess Martha Luise of Norway announced their engagement Gwyneth Paltrow–recognized shaman Durek Vivett after three years of relationship. This week, the princess announced that she will officially step back from royal engagements once the couple is married. In a video posted to her Instagram account in Norwegian, she explained that her decision was made after consulting her father. King Harald V

“I have decided that at this time I will not continue my official duties protecting various organizations,” she said. “There will be someone else in the family to fill my role. I wish the organizations the best of luck in the important work they are doing.” She added that the decision was made in a “lovely” and “respectful” manner.

Durek and Martha Louise run a spiritual healing-related business, and in 2019 she announced that she would not use the title of princess in connection with the business.

The royal family confirmed the change in a statement: “Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett are endeavoring to distinguish more clearly between their activities and their connection with royal family. Accordingly, they will not indicate any connection with the Royal House of Norway on their social media channels (except @PrincessMarthaLouise on Instagram), in media productions or in connection with any other commercial activity.”

In 2020 Märtha Louise opened up to this vanity fair about the controversy that ensued when her relationship with Durek became public, particularly because of his background as a spiritual healer. “I don’t know if I can say that much about it, to be honest. It’s very contradictory,” she said. “Here in America, people are more open to it. In Norway this is very, very, very controversial. I should be with a CEO or a lord or someone of high rank. Being with a shaman is very, extremely, terribly unconventional. It’s crazy.”

Though she didn’t directly address the controversy over her relationship with Durek, who will be the first black man to marry into European royals, some of her comments hint at the uproar. “I’m involved in health and research and I have health training myself as a physical therapist and I respect conventional medicine,” she said. “I see alternative medicine as an important complement to conventional medicine.” (She used the Norwegian word “skolemedisinen”, which can be directly translated as “conventional medicine”, but is used to describe scientific or evidence-based medicine, unlike traditional medicine.)

Martha Louise first stopped using the title “Her Royal Highness” for work in 2002 when she decided to pursue a private career. Her first marriage to writer Ari Behn ended in divorce in 2017, two years before his death.
