Priory and Springhill GP surgery to close unless new doctors found

A two-base GP practice in County Down is expected to close in early 2023 unless new GPs can be found to take over.

Riory and Springhill Surgery, which operates from two locations in Holywood and Bangor, provides primary care services to 14,525 patients

However, current GP partners at practices have said they will return their contract to health chiefs on February 1, 2023.

A search is underway for a replacement contractor or group of GPs to provide services.

In a statement, the current GP partners said: “Priory Surgery’s current GP partners (including Springhill Surgery) will cease providing general medical services effective February 1, 2023.

“The Strategic Planning and Performance Group (which replaced the former Health and Social Care Board) is seeking a replacement GP contractor or group of GPs to provide general medical services to the patients currently on our practice roster. You can continue to access the care from the practice as usual.

“We would like to ask that you do not contact the practice to ask about this update as we are experiencing very high demand for our phone system from patients seeking access to GP services. If you have any questions about this, please contact the Strategy and Planning Group at the Public Health Department, Tel: 028 95363926.”

North Down MLA Andrew Muir said he was concerned to hear the news.

“My Allianz colleagues and I will aim to meet with the Department of Health and the British Medical Association to discuss this development, which is relevant to so many people.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “The Priory and Springhill Surgery will remain open and patients requiring GP care should continue to contact the practice as usual. Efforts are being made to find GPs to take over the practice.

“The patients have been written to and should receive correspondence in the coming days. We will continue to update patients on the outcome of this process.” Priory and Springhill GP surgery to close unless new doctors found
