PSG Transfer News Roundup: Former player gives verdict on Lionel Messi’s World Cup chances; Parisians to initiate contract talks with Sergio Ramos in 2023, and more

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are firmly behind the wheel in the race for the Ligue 1 title. New coach Christophe Galtier has led his team to the top of the table after eight games with seven wins and one draw.

Meanwhile, former France international Marcel Desailly has been exploring Lionel Messi’s chances of winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year. Elsewhere, the Parisians plan to start contract talks with Sergio Ramos in 2023.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the top PSG transfer stories from September 21, 2022:

Marcel Desailly judges Lionel Messi’s World Cup chances

Marcel Desailly reckons Lionel Messi may not lead Argentina to a World Cup triumph later this year.

The PSG superstar has been in stunning form this season after a rather subdued 2021-22 campaign. The 35-year-old joined the Parisians last summer after his Barcelona contract expired and initially struggled to find a foothold in France.

However, Messi has broken his bonds this season and is running the show for the giants of Ligue 1. The outstanding performances of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner have given La Albiceleste hopes of redemption at Qatar’s premier sporting event wings.

Speaking to L’Equipe, as quoted by PSG Talk, Desailly acknowledged Messi’s qualities. However, the Frenchman pointed out that the World Cup is a different ballgame and requires continuity in performance.

“Messi remains an exceptional player but he has never managed a World Cup like Maradona did in 1986. He can withstand the elements if the opponent gives him space because he’s a ‘killer’. But there are no coincidences at a World Cup. You need continuity in performance and I don’t think one individual can still hold a team and make the difference in an entire tournament,” Desailly said.

Desailly also expressed doubts about Messi’s teammates’ ability to face the situation at the World Cup.

“It was complicated, but since my generation it hasn’t been possible. And I don’t think the players around Messi can raise their level. In such a context there is decompression. If you have players that aren’t top flight, they lose their skills as the games go on,” Desailly said.

Messi has made 11 appearances for the Parisians in all competitions this season, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.

PSG want to start contract talks with Sergio Ramos in 2023

According to Mundo Deportivo via PSG Talk, PSG will start contract talks with Sergio Ramos next year. The Spanish defender has made an excellent start to the new season at the Parc des Princes after an injury-plagued debut season. Ramos has steadily developed into one of the most reliable defenders in the league.

The 35-year-old has played eleven times in all competitions and scored one goal. Ramos has averaged 1.4 interceptions per game so far and appears to have shed his fitness woes as well.

The Parisians are happy with his efforts and ready to extend his stay at the Parc des Princes. The player is in the final year of his contract but the Parisians won’t start negotiations for a renewal until 2023.

Chelsea will have to move mountains to secure Luis Campos, says Ben Jacobs

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea will have to do something incredible to secure Luis Campos’ services.

The PSG sporting director is a man in demand and wanted at Stamford Bridge. The Blues failed due to the commitment of Christoph Freund from RB Salzburg and now rely on Campos.

@ChelseaYdot PSG claim Campos is going nowhere. It would require something pretty incredible as he would have to go and drop all other commitments from Chelsea’s perspective as sporting director. No chance of him advising him as PSG won’t allow that and he wouldn’t leave them alone with it.

However, Jacobs wrote on social media that the Parisians would not allow Campos to leave.

“PSG claim that Campos is going nowhere. It would take something pretty incredible because he would have to go and drop all other commitments from a Chelsea perspective when he’s sporting director. No chance of him advising him as PSG won’t allow that and he wouldn’t just leave them alone,” Jacobs wrote.

Campos has brought some new faces to Paris this summer and is likely to have a busy January as well.
