Pub group Marston’s is hiring more over-50s as recruitment pressure eases
UB group Marston’s said hiring pressure has eased as they hired “more over-50s”.
This comes as the company said sales had increased over the past six months thanks to strong beverage sales, despite the pressure on customer budgets.
Hotel bosses and trade associations have warned of staffing shortages over the past year as vacancy rates in the industry hit record levels, affecting the ability of some businesses to trade.
However, Andrew Andrea, chief executive of the 1,440-strong pub group, says staffing is in a “good position” following an improvement in the recruitment market.

He told the PA news agency that the company has benefited from older workers joining the company.
“Right now, they find the availability and quality of talent okay,” he said.
“It certainly differs depending on the location, for example in inner cities, but the situation is quite good at the moment.
“We are employing more over 50s and it is very encouraging to see more people coming back into the workforce in this market.”
Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment rose to 3.9% in the first three months of the year.
On Tuesday, Marston’s also announced that its like-for-like sales for the six months ended April 1 rose 10.7% compared to the same period last year.
The group said beverage sales performed well despite poor weather at the end of the half-year and pressure on consumer spending.
Mr Andrea added: “Our performance in the first half of the year clearly shows that consumers remain interested in celebrating and connecting with the British pub.”
“The macroeconomic environment is becoming increasingly stable and recent evidence suggests that both the cost outlook and consumer confidence are steadily improving.”
Shares of the company fell 5.4% after early trading.
