Quickfire double keeps Coleraine on the rise as Lee Lynch and Dean Jarvis fire them into third with win over Newry City

Coleraine moved up to third in the Danske Bank Premiership when two goals in four minutes helped the Bannsiders secure a 2-0 win over Newry City at The Showgrounds.

After a game of few chances in the first half, the game was finally won in the first 13 minutes of the second half when Lee Lynch and Dean Jarvis scored to seal all three points for Oran Kearney’s men.

Looking to recover from their defeat by Glentoran last weekend, the Bannsiders almost broke the deadlock with less than a minute left on the clock. A layoff from Matthew Shevlin found Josh Carson and his half-volley hit the top of the bar.

Newry sat back comfortably and absorbed pressure and it almost paid off when Lorcan Forde capitalized on a defensive error and pushed forward. The former Linfield man charged into the box but his attempt was deflected wide to the corner.

A few minutes after the restart, the Stripes thought they had a lead when Evan McLaughlin worked the ball onto his left foot, but his long-range shot sailed inches over the bar.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute, however, when a superb through ball from Josh Carson put Lynch on target. The midfielder scored a wonderful first touch before firing past Maguire for his debut goal for Coleraine.

Four minutes later, another summer signing from Larne made it 2-0 as Bannsiders doubled their lead.

A pass from Conor McDermott found Glackin unmarked in the box and his cross was nudged home by Jarvis, who hit the bull’s eye, also in Coleraine colours.

An offside flag prevented Coleraine from scoring a third in the 78th minute when Jarvis delivered a dangerous cross into the box which was knocked home by substitute Conor McKendry. The winger started to celebrate but it proved premature and in vain when the linesman belatedly raised his flag.
