Relive what happened as Manchester United’s crushing 4-0 defeat left Cristiano Ronaldo smiling helplessly when they faced Brighton last time

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had a match to forget when the Red Devils last faced Brighton & Hove Albion.

Manchester United will play their first official game under new manager Erik ten Hag on Sunday (7 August). They will play Brighton in their first game of the 2022-23 Premier League season at Old Trafford.

Fans are eagerly awaiting how the Red Devils will fare under their new boss. However, the Dutchman has a major headache ahead of Sunday’s game against the Seagulls.

Anthony Martial, who started five Manchester United friendlies last season, was ruled out of the game with a hamstring injury. The centre-forward has therefore become a problem area for Ten Hag.

The former Ajax boss still has five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo at his disposal. However, the striker only played 45 minutes in the pre-season.

It is unclear whether Ronaldo will play for the Red Devils against Brighton on Sunday. However, the Portuguese icon did not have a good time last time he faced Graham Potter’s side.

Manchester United met Brighton in the penultimate game of the 2021/22 season at the Amex Stadium. Ronaldo was among those who started for Ralf Rangnick’s team that day.

However, the Red Devils suffered a devastating 4-0 defeat against Potter and Co. in the Amex. Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard were among the hosts’ goalscorers.

Caicedo opened the scoring for Brighton just 15 minutes into the game. The Ecuador international scored his first goal for the club when he defeated David de Gea with a low shot from outside the box.

Cucurella doubled the Seagulls’ lead early in the second half. The Spain left-back combined with Trossard to find the back of the net for Potter’s side.

“He smashed it home!” 🎙️💥 What a moment for @Cucurella3. 🥺

Trossard then set up Gross for Brighton’s third 57th minute of the game. It wasn’t long before the Belgium international stepped into the game himself, adding to Manchester United’s troubles.

Ronaldo’s performance was summed up by a first-half free-kick. The former Real Madrid superstar has also been booked for a fight against Brighton’s Lewis Dunk.

The 37-year-old looked helpless throughout the game in May. He couldn’t help but smile as the Red Devils were beaten 4-0 by Brighton.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is uncertain

The loss to Brighton mathematically ended Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four last season. The Red Devils’ failure to do so has raised doubts about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo is keen to continue playing Champions League football as he nears the end of his career. He even asked the Old Trafford outfit to allow him to leave because of it.

However, the Premier League giants have claimed the striker will not be sold. Now it remains to be seen where the future of the Portuguese icon will lead.
