Netflix’s latest Spanish original is a poignant overhaul of the usual girls’ travel formula, trading comedy for critically acclaimed and resonant themes of friendship, grief, loss, self-discovery, identity and growth. It’s a sad and funny experience spanning six episodes, and those caught up in it may wonder about its possible future. Here’s everything we know.

Extended or canceled status – will there be a Season 2 of The Girls at the Back?

Status: TBC (but unlikely)

The girls on the back was billed as a miniseries, which usually means one and done. And in this case, it’s absolutely the right decision, as the story is about a journey of self-discovery and healing that prepares the main characters for another, more challenging journey, where they’ll all confront one of them as they battle cancer have to.

While it eschews the crowd-pleasing comedy formula that usually defines shows like this, it doesn’t mean that The girls on the back won’t be popular — on the contrary, its earnest portrayal of friendship will likely win over most viewers, though I imagine it won’t achieve anywhere near the kind of nuclear numbers it would take for Netflix to consider a second season. That’s for the best, because while the ending is intentionally inconclusive, it’s still a powerful farewell to a story that we can imagine continuing without our presence.

What is The Girls at the Back about?

According to Netflix:

“Five women in their thirties, who have been friends since school, all organize a holiday week together every year without exception. Circumstances are special this year because one of them has just been diagnosed with cancer.” Renewed or canceled – will there be a Season 2 of The Girls at the Back?
