Republicans Double Down on Obliterating Abortion Rights in “Commitment to America” Agenda

If you are a sentient being who has been conscious over the past few months, you are probably aware of the fact that the Republican Party is waging an all-out assault on reproductive rights. Since Roe v. calf was overturned in June, GOP officials across the country have passed or enacted extreme abortion laws, while conservatives in Congress have targeted a national abortion ban. Given the unpopularity of this position – the majority of the public disapproved of it roe being overturned, with 62% of Americans supporting the medical procedure in “all” or “most” cases — you might have thought Congressional Republicans wouldn’t mention the issue until November if they hope to regain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. But apparently they just can’t help it.

In a one-sided “Commitment to America,” formally unveiled Friday, in which House Conservatives set out their legislative priorities if they prevail in the midterm elections, the party said it would devote its time to “protection,” among other things[ing] the life of unborn children.” Apparently what they mean by this is that they will do everything in their power to eliminate the rights of pregnant people. While the agenda is lacking in detail or suggestions, filling in the blanks is not difficult. I’ll speak to Axios, representative Bob Good Noting approvingly that there is a “strong majority” of House Republicans supporting the Life at Conception Act, which would define life as beginning at the moment of conception, effectively making abortion illegal. (The bill currently has 166 co-sponsors.) Meanwhile, Rep don bacon told the outlet he believes the leadership will put a 15-week abortion ban up for a vote and that it “will definitely happen.” We saw legal precursors to this effort just a few months ago, in July, when 209 House Republicans voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act; 205 House Republicans voted to bar women from traveling across state lines to obtain an abortion; and 195 House Republicans voted against the Contraceptive Right Act.

In response to the GOP’s “Commitment to America.” Joe Biden warned: “If the Republicans gain control of Congress, abortion will be outlawed.”

Elsewhere in the plan, Conservatives vowed to continue their assault on trans rights by “ensuring only women can compete in women’s sports.” They also plan to pull a Ron DeSantis through “advance[ing] the Parents’ Bill of Rights.” (Florida’s Parents’ Rights in Education Act, better known as Don’t Say Gay, was signed into law in March and has already turned state schools into dystopian hellscapes.)

In addition, the “Commitment to America” also includes the promise to enact “growth-promoting tax and deregulation policies”. Under the section “A Nation That Is Safe,” the party specifically promises “illegal [border] Border crossings” and “need legal status to get a job”. And of course, in a year when there are mass shootings almost every day in America, “safeguard[ing] the second amendment” makes the list of commitments of the GOP. Same as “guarantee[ing] Freedom of religion” – but given the party’s move towards Christian nationalism, we can be fairly certain that only one religion will benefit. There’s also an unintentionally hilarious vow to “save and strengthen Social Security and Medicare,” programs Republicans have already made clear are on the chopping block.

But hey, one person has already given the agenda high marks:
