Revealed: the 10 most reliable makes of car, according to MotorEasy warranty data

Despite our grumbling, cars today are better than ever. They may be huge, bloated, and inelegant, but in terms of sheer mechanics – and the business of getting from A to B – they get better almost every day. The sound of a blown gasket, a failed solenoid valve, or even a slipping V-belt seems like distant memories to the modern motorist. As such, it’s easy to forget about reliability altogether – until your car goes awry.

While cars break down less than they used to, they are becoming more expensive and more complicated to repair. What might have been a simple task 20 years ago is now a complex task costing hundreds or thousands of pounds.

The motoring association MotorEasy has created an index to explain this, ranking manufacturers based on a combination of absolute reliability and inexpensive repairs. They did this using 40,000 years of warranty data and the cost is based on all repair quotes and not just payouts. Each manufacturer has at least a century of data and the entire index is based on a total of 47,353 policies.

We’re obviously talking about averages here. No doubt there is a Subaru owner reading this article who is just dying to write in and tell us about the problems they have had. And it’s worth noting that cheap, mechanically uncomplicated cars tend to do better in reliability surveys than more expensive and complicated ones. Put simply, there’s less to go wrong.

Ultimately, our top ten list gives a general idea of how reliable each brand is, based on cars over three years old. Some of the results may surprise you…

10. Kia

With its seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty and solid reputation for build quality, Kia is one of those brands we expected higher, but repairs on these Korean cars are among the most expensive, mitigating the low breakdown rate.
