Ridley Scott loved Fede Álvarez’s new Alien film
Ridley Scott is no stranger to new talent joining the franchises he founded – he did it with Denis Villeneuves Blade Runner 2049a film He recently said that he regrets not directing it himself. As Variety reportsÁlvarez discussed the feedback he received during his conversation with Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023 (you can watch the entire conversation Here). Scott is lead producer on Álvarez’s film, which is titled “Supposedly” in the trade notes Alien: Romulusand Álvarez – who is no stranger to entering an established cinematic universe, having previously directed the film in 2013 evil Dead reboot – sent him his share, an experience he described as “incredibly tense.”
Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. “Everyone pointed out to me that Ridley is really tough… especially when it has something to do with his films,” Álvarez said. Although intimidated, he was determined to hear Scott’s reaction in person. “Even if he said, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to stand in front of him and look him in the eye,” he said. “And then he walks into the room and says, ‘Fede, what can I say?’ It’s fucking awesome.’ … My family knows that it was one of the most beautiful moments of my life to have a master like him, whom I admired so much, there, even to watch a film that I made, but especially something like this …and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it. One of his best compliments was, “The dialogue is great. Are you the author?” Yes!'”
That’s an encouraging endorsement for a film we don’t know much about except that it features an ensemble cast led by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), takes place on a faraway planet and involves an up-close encounter with, you know, a hostile species. The release will take place on August 16, 2024.
