Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio has refused to rule out the possibility of a future move to Barcelona amid claims that the Blaugrana are interested in him.
Marco Asensio has been on the Real Madrid books since 2014 when he joined from RCD Mallorca. Since then he has played 239 games for them in all competitions and helped them win 15 trophies.
However, the Spain international is now in the last year of his contract Los Blancos. As playing time has been difficult to come by under Carlo Ancelotti, there is no guarantee that he is ready to sign a contract extension.
Asensio have been heavily linked with a move from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer transfer window. There were suggestions he was offered to Arsenal and Manchester United but he stayed where he was.
Should the attacker not sign a new deal, Real Madrid are in danger of losing him on a free transfer next summer. To add to their worries, Barcelona have recently been linked with a shock move for him.
However, Asensio has insisted he doesn’t know if the Catalan giants are interested in signing him. He pointed out that being linked with multiple clubs is only normal for him due to his contract situation. He told the Spanish radio station DEAL WITH [via Fabrizio Romano]:
“I don’t know if Barcelona want me. There are rumors about a lot of clubs, it’s normal.”
Asensio was also asked if he would consider a move to the Camp Nou if that were the case Blaugrana came calling. The 26-year-old declined to delve into the question, saying he hadn’t considered such a move. He said:
“I never thought about a future at Barca, I didn’t appreciate them so I don’t know! I can’t answer at the moment.”
While Asensio remained coy when asked about the possibility of a move to the Catalans, it remains to be seen if he would be interested in the move.
How has Asensio fared for Real Madrid amid Barcelona ties?
Asensio has found his playing time at the Bernabeu limited so far this season. The versatile attacker has played just 47 minutes in all competitions for Ancelotti’s side.
Kylian Mbappe’s decision to stay at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) or even Karim Benzema’s recent injury didn’t extend Asensio’s playing time. He is experiencing a frustrating phase under Ancelotti.
Asensio could therefore be tempted to seek a move from Real Madrid next year. However, it is unclear whether he would be tempted to move to Barcelona.
