Robber points .45 to salesman’s head, then 3 armed customers come to the rescue, police say

A suspected robber turned the tables during an attempted robbery of a convenience store in Ellijay, Georgia, according to police this week.

Shawn Sutton, 39, of nearby Blue Ridge, Georgia, was arrested for robbery after the incident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday, the Ellijay Police Department reported.

Sutton’s alleged attempted robbery would involve the intervention of three responsibly armed citizens, a .45 caliber handgun pointed at a poor salesman’s head and, perhaps most unlikely, a pair of women’s underwear used as a disguise.

Yes, seriously. Let’s get into that.

According to police, Sutton entered the store and posed as a customer who wanted to buy an energy drink.

At that time there were two customers in the store and one at the pumps.

After reaching for the drink, Sutton reportedly pulled off a pair of women’s panties from around his neck to cover his face.

Ah yes. The perfect disguise. It’s also worth noting that if there was no surveillance and no one was looking at him before he put the “mask” on, then videos or witnesses have likely already captured this guy’s face.

So disguised, the report said, Sutton went behind the counter, pointed a .45 caliber handgun at the clerk’s head, and demanded all the money.

The other buyers noticed what was going on and quickly got involved.

“A customer who was legally carrying a concealed handgun produced his firearm and intervened in the robbery,” police said. “[T]The second customer went to his vehicle, retrieved his pistol and returned to help the first customer subdue the suspect.”

It was at this point that Sutton realized he was literally outmatched and decided it was time to make his exit.

When he tried to get out of Dodge, police told the third customer: who was also armedShe came to the store to help, at which point the first customer warned the other two by saying Sutton had already been disarmed.

At that point the police arrived. Sutton, who was still trying to flee, had to be tasered, officials reported.

Police arrested Sutton and his wife Melody, 39, who were reportedly waiting in the couple’s vehicle.

It’s possible the woman had been waiting there to get away faster, although Ellijay Police made no guesses.

Shawn Sutton was charged with “armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.” WSB TV. Melody Sutton faces charges of “armed robbery, intimidation and taking control of a substance”.

Should these two be found guilty in court, that incident can likely be logged somewhere in the Why You Don’t Commit Dangerous Crimes in Small Towns in Constitutional Carry States manual. Robber points .45 to salesman’s head, then 3 armed customers come to the rescue, police say
