Roy Keane claims Arsenal paid ‘too much’ for Declan Rice ahead of his standout performance in the Community Shield

Keane, who worked with Rice as Martin O’Neill’s assistant when the player won his three caps for the Republic of Ireland, holds him in high esteem but isn’t convinced he’s worth the price.
Asked about the midfielder’s prospects in north London ahead of Sunday’s Gunners’ Community Shield clash with Manchester City, where he made his competitive debut, Keane told ITV1: “He’ll obviously be surrounded by better players and different demands. “
“If he plays a little further up the field then I think he definitely has the quality to score more goals.
“He obviously has the physical strength to get into the penalty area.
“You obviously paid way too much for him. Certainly not worth more than £100m Declan Rice but a really good player.
“We’re going to find out how good Declan is over the next year or two. He shows up every week, he’s a big strong boy – they’re talking again about that physicality that they’ve been missing for the last month or two (last season).
“Does he really have the highest quality when it comes to seeing a pass and scoring nine, ten goals? We’ll find out soon.”
Rice’s move to the Emirates Stadium last month after helping the Hammers win the Europa Conference League set a new British transfer record.
