Russians forced to serve in Ukraine with ‘serious’ health problems – MoD

Many Russian troops are being forced to serve in Ukraine with “serious” health problems, while those forced to dig trenches under fire are likely to have suffered “particularly heavy casualties”, British defense experts believe.

According to the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD), a number of “common themes” are emerging in the experiences of Moscow’s mobilized reservists, whose deployment is often characterized by “inadequate” training and personal equipment.

An update from the Defense Ministry’s Defense Intelligence Service suggests the Kremlin is likely to be concerned that more and more families are willing to risk arrest by protesting the conditions their relatives face in the war.

Most mobilized reservists have previously served, it said, with “numerous instances” suggesting there is a high likelihood their medical status will not be “appropriately verified.”

“Many are forced to serve with serious, chronic health conditions,” the update said.

It also suggests that there were likely “particularly heavy casualties” among those who dug “ambitious trench systems” while under artillery fire around the town of Svatove in the Luhansk region.

Meanwhile, reservists have been killed in “large numbers” in frontal attacks on well-established Ukrainian defense zones in the Donetsk region around the city of Bakhmut, sources say.

“Two months after President (Vladimir) Putin announced ‘partial mobilization,’ common themes are emerging in the experience of mobilized Russian reservists,” the update said.

“Their deployment is often marked by confusion about eligibility for service, inadequate training and personal equipment, and commitment to extremely grueling combat missions.

“Most – though not all – mobilized reservists have previously served, and numerous examples suggest that reservists’ medical status is most likely not adequately screened and many are forced to serve with serious, chronic health conditions.

Mobilized reservists most likely suffered particularly heavy casualties after being committed to digging ambitious trench systems while under artillery fire around the town of Svatove in Luhansk Oblast.

“In Donetsk Oblast, reservists were killed in large numbers in frontal attacks on well-established Ukrainian defense zones around the city of Bakhmut.

“The Kremlin will likely be concerned that more reservist families are willing to risk arrest by protesting the conditions under which their loved ones are serving.”
