Ryan Gosling said starring in Netflix spy thriller The Gray Man gave him “a little experience” in a Marvel movie.
he Hollywood star, 41, plays Court Gentry, an ex-CIA agent who uncovers a secret that puts his life in jeopardy in the film from Anthony and Joe Russo – the directors best known for their work on the Avengers – films are known.
The Gray Man also stars Captain America star Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, a former CIA agent who hunts Gentry around the world, while Knives Out’s Ana de Armas plays Agent Dani Miranda and Rege-Jean Page as malicious spy boss appears.
Gosling has yet to appear in a Marvel film but is said to have expressed interest in playing the character Ghost Rider.
Speaking to the PA news agency at a special screening of The Gray Man in London, he said: “I feel like I need to have a bit of experience with it because obviously it’s the Russos and Chris and the crew that they’re working with same crew – so I have a little bit of Marvel experience, a little bit.”
When asked about Evans’ antagonist wearing a mustache, he added, “When Chris came in with the mustache, it was exciting because a hero is only as good as his villain. When he showed up, I was like, ‘Okay!’”
Joe Russo said Gosling’s joining Marvel would be a great “story” but that all of the cast were talented enough to take on a role in the superhero world.
He told PA: “I think they would get on their knees to bring one of these guys into the Marvel Universe. But Ryan, oh my god. What a story that would be.
“Rege, Jessica Henwick, Ana – so badass in this film. I could always go on.”
Fresh from starring as Bond girl Paloma in the 007 film No Time To Die, de Armas said she enjoyed the many physical stunts during filming.
When asked how her experience differed between Bond and The Gray Man, she said: “It was different because in the Bond film I only had 15 minutes in the film, which was amazing, and I know the audience loves the character loved. Paloma was great.
“But this one obviously required a lot more work and preparation. We rehearsed for about three months and I tried to do as much as possible myself.
“That’s what the stunt doubles are for, the really dangerous parts, but I really enjoyed it.
“I didn’t know I would get into the genre that much and I like it. It’s a lot of work, but it pays off and looks amazing on screen.”
The Gray Man is in theaters now and launches on Netflix on July 22nd.
