Ryder Cup 2023: Team Europe Current Qualification Stand, Robert Macintyre joins Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy
Time is running out for those looking to campaign for a place on the Ryder Cup team in Rome.
Team Europe will have a chance to lift the trophy as early as September when they welcome the American side to Italy. The return to home comforts is welcome – it’s been 30 years since the United States last came to Europe and won.
Jon Rahm will be a key element of this team, although his form has slacked off since his Masters win and he is the fourth Spanish player to wear the Green Jacket. Unsurprisingly, Rory McIlroy is at the top of the rankings even as he continues to wait to end the great drought, while Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are all sure to join the team.
Robert MacIntyre propelled McIlroy to the top at the Scottish Open earlier in the summer and although it wasn’t enough to win in front of his home fans, it automatically advanced to qualifying in the European rankings.
Luke Donald will have six captain choices later this year when deciding his European team, double the number of Padraig Harrington in Wisconsin after the new qualification process was confirmed.
Qualifying for Team Europe began last September at the BMW PGA Championship and runs through September 3 this year. The top three on the European points list will get their places in the team, as will the top three on the world points list who have not yet qualified via the European rankings.
