The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip line is the most popular collection of foldable phones on the planet, and with good reason – they combine a foldable form factor with decent specs and a relatively affordable price point.
Hopefully the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will continue this trend, and in this article we’ve made a wish list of what else we expect from it.
But that’s not all. We’re already starting to hear rumors about what the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 could offer, so find those below as well; along with information about the possible release date and price. We’ll also update this article if we hear anything new about this phone, so check back soon.
In a nutshell
- What is it? The next entry in Samsung’s foldable Z Flip line
- when is it out Expected August 2023
- How much will it cost? Probably around $999.99 / £999 / AU$1,499
Release date and price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
While there’s still no news on when the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be announced, we can make a good guess. We predict that we’ll see it on August 9, 2023 because that’s the second Wednesday of next August, and Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 on the second Wednesday of August in their respective release years brought.
Based on the form so far, there will likely be a wait of around two weeks before it ships, so you should be able to get your hands on it by the end of August if our predictions are correct.
The price is harder to predict, but it will likely cost a similar amount to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, which starts at $999.99 / £999 / AU$1,499.
News and leaks for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The only Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 leak so far comes from a source claiming it will run on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
Given that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 uses the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, this always looked likely – but if there’s another Plus version of the chipset next year, then the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 is a possibility too.
In any case, this is likely to be one of the top Android chipsets of 2023, so it should pack a decent punch.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: What we want to see
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 wasn’t a huge upgrade from the Galaxy Z Flip 3, so we’d like to see major improvements from the next model, including the following things.
1. A telecamera
A telephoto lens is a standard feature on almost all high-end phones, but it’s a feature the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 lacks.
In fact, the Z Flip 4 only has a dual-lens camera consisting of a 12-megapixel primary and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide snapper, so it’s pretty basic and lacking on the photo front. We’re looking to see big upgrades to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 here, with a telephoto lens added and ideally upgrades to the other cameras as well.
2. Better battery life
Battery life is an issue for many phones and even more so for foldable phones as they tend to have smaller batteries than similar sized traditional cell phones.
That’s probably because the folding mechanism takes up space that could otherwise be used by a battery, but it’s definitely an issue; which often results in below-average longevity.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, for example, only has a 3,700mAh battery, and in our testing we found that its performance was underwhelming, so let’s see a battery boost in the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
3. A lower price
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is actually one of the more affordable foldable phones, but for the specs you get – apart from the foldable screen – it’s still pretty pricey, so we’d like to see Samsung price the Samsung down a bit further down presses Galaxy Z Flip 5.
This probably won’t happen – especially if the specs are significantly improved – but it would make the device all the more attractive.
4. A larger cover disc
While the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s 6.7-inch foldable main screen is a decent size, the 1.9-inch cover display – which you can see and interact with when the main screen is folded – is too small to do a lot with .
Sure, it can show notifications and the time, but it’s too small to properly interact with it, meaning you’ll have to flip the phone open for most smartphone functions. We’d like to see a larger secondary screen on the next model, allowing you to keep the phone closed more often.
5. Major upgrades
We’ve detailed some of the requested upgrades above, but in general we’d like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 to feel like a major improvement over the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
The last two models have been very similar, so it’s about time we see some major updates – and we need to do it to stand a good chance of being among the best foldable phones.
