Ian Jones’ March Madness Bracket
National Champion: Marquette (+2000)
Marquette has a wild combination of factors going into it. They’re one of the best passing teams in the country, one of the best shooting teams, especially on fast breaks, and they force turnovers with overwhelming defense. Despite being a bit undersized, the Golden Eagles can compete with larger, better-rebounding teams; They narrowly lost to Purdue earlier in the season and their two wins against UConn are prime examples.
If that quick offense and swarming defense can keep teams from settling in the paint, Shaka Smart will take home his first title.

National Champion: Alabama (+650)
With future top-five pick Brandon Miller, this is the year the Tide not only reach their first-ever Final Four, but also bring home the first college basketball national championship in school history. While Miller grabs most of the headlines, this team is anything but a one-man show. The backcourt combo of senior Jahvon Quinerly and junior Marcus Sears is just the kind of experienced, level-headed ball handling you want in March.
Bama are playing at a fast pace – fourth nationally – which exaggerates their final scores, but defense is actually the calling card of this team. The Tide Rate offers the third best defense per KenPom.
An NBA-level scorer, an experienced backcourt and a tenacious defense? That’s a recipe for a national championship.

National Champion: Marquette (+2000)
Big East Coach of the Year Shaka Smart has embraced this Marquette program and built a culture capable of victory. They’ve already run through the Big East tournament to become champions once this season and they can do it again. Because of this tournament, Marquette got a two-seed over Xavier, who got a three-seed. That seeding at least gives them a cheap path to the Final Four.
Few teams are hotter than Marquette, having won nine straight games and winning 14 of their last 15. Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kowek is averaging just under 19 points per game in the Big East tournament and will be a key part of Golden Eagles becoming National Champions.
