Scarlett Moffatt opens up about childhood illness

Scarlett Moffatt has opened up about a childhood illness she can still suffer from as an adult.

The 31-year-old former Gogglebox star will host a Channel 4 documentary about Tourette.

She believes the pandemic is related to an increase in tics due to anxiety affecting young people.

And the ex-queen of the jungle on I’m A Celebrity is hoping she can help after suffering Bell’s paralysis herself.

Scarlett Moffatt: Her childhood condition

TV favorite Scarlett told The Sun how the disease swept over her for several months when she was 11.

Scarlett’s tics included constant blinking and trouble breathing. Her mouth also hung down on one side and she had trouble closing her right eye.

The problems occurred during a very stressful time in her life.

She recalls: “I went through a really bad time when I was 11. I hate talking about it because I don’t want people to think, ‘Oh, woe is me.’ But a car drove into me and smashed all my teeth. That was awful. I had no front teeth.”

Scarlett continued: “I’ve been bullied before and that gave them another reason to pick on me. It was awful. I would never want anyone to feel that way so it probably made me a nicer person as I overcompensate as I know what it feels like to feel crappy.

She also suggested that she was “an easy target” because she chatted up a lot with her parents, Betty and Mark.

But then her father fell ill with a rare skin cancer in 2001.

His illness devastated the family – and Mark suffered 110 stitches after a skin transplant.

And that’s when Scarlett’s tics kicked in.

Scarlett told the tabloid that many of her teachers dismissed her tics. And her family didn’t understand fear.

Thankfully, her father’s health improved. But Scarlett needed treatment herself, too.

“I was on a long cycle of steroids and I had speech therapy and the tics went away although the effects of the sagging are still there. Even now, my face isn’t symmetrical at all, but I don’t mind,” she said.

Scarlett added that she rarely has a bad day with her tics anymore. But her symptoms can still flare up when she’s stressed or tired.
