The 150th anniversary of the first official international football match is marked today with a friendly match between Scotland and England.
The Scots first welcomed the ‘old enemy’ to the West of Scotland Cricket Club in 1872 when 4,000 fans watched international football being born in a 0-0 draw.
Today’s contest is the first friendly between the two rivals in almost nine years, which England won at Celtic Park, but there have been three competitive games between them since then – the last two of which ended in a draw.
The last game at Wembley during the Euro 2020 group stage was a tepid stalemate, while Harry Kane scored a last-gasp equalizer in the last meeting in Glasgow in 2017, ending England’s blushes after a late appearance from Leigh Griffiths in a dramatic World Cup -Qualifier saved .
Both teams are on the verge of reaching Euro 2024 and will put aside their respective successful qualifying campaigns in a high-profile showdown that is a friendly in name only.
Date, kick-off time and venue
Scotland v England kick-off is scheduled for today, Tuesday 12 September 2023, at 7:45pm BST.
The game will take place at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Scotland have been in top form under Steve Clarke, making it five wins in a row in Cyprus on Friday, and will surely want to keep it that way with another win against England. Kieran Tierney, Andy Robertson, Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour were all set to play.
As for England, Gareth Southgate may want to make a change as the Three Lions were rather lifeless in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine in Wroclaw. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire could do with a retirement, which would give the likes of Levi Colwill and Phil Foden a chance to shine.
Aaron Ramsdale, Callum Wilson and Eberechi Eze will all be hoping for minutes after coming off the bench in Poland.
Scotland vs England prediction
Scotland have more than enough potential to clinch a win in front of their home fans, especially considering how immature England looked at the weekend.
England had to rely on inspiration from Kane to get a point against Ukraine, so Southgate could do with more spark in midfield to make a real game of it.
