Sean McVay leaving Rams? Mike Florio is confident the team will have a new HC in 2023

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed the media after the team’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks by preemptively shutting down any questions about his employment status.

Here’s what he said in a clip about Pro Football Talk:

“I will talk about things related to the game. Anything related to what’s about to happen to me? Like I said, I’m not thinking about it right now… any question of that nature, I’m not going to answer.”

Will Sean McVay leave the Rams this offseason?

In response, NFL analyst Mike Florio claimed on Pro Football Talk that the head coach is in the process of planning his exit from the organization:

“That doesn’t sound like a guy coming back. When you come back, when it’s ridiculous to even suggest that you might not come back. You turn that stuff off. ,What are you talking about …? What else would I do? I am 36 years old. I’ve only been here six years. We won a Super Bowl last year. Why are we even having this conversation…?”

Sean McVay addresses the rumors that he may be retiring to work in broadcasting

Florio continued, explaining that it’s not a question of “if” but of “how” and “when”:

“I thought about it last year and decided to stay. I’m fully behind this team.” What he said yesterday sounds a lot like a man preparing to leave. It’s just a matter of figuring out when and how he’s going to do it.

Sean McVay’s 2022 season success with Rams under the Jeff Fisher era

Rams head coach at Los Angeles vs. Seattle

Longtime Los Angeles Rams fans remember what life was like before Sean McVay joined the Rams. Prior to the head coach’s arrival, predecessor Jeff Fisher was another in a long list of coaches who failed to get the team off the ground.

During Fisher’s time on the team, they didn’t make the playoffs every year and didn’t get past .500.

The only time I got to see Sean McVay leave the house #Aries is with the condition that there is a one year break. He needs a year to take some time off and an interim HC is likely to be named between Thomas Brown & Raheem Morris. Then he comes back. I can’t imagine him retiring for long if he does.

Between Fisher’s hiring in 2012 and his midseason exit in 2016, he had six wins in his worst full season while McVay won five in his worst season. Of course, fans still place the head coach well above the other coaches due to two Super Bowl appearances, a Super Bowl win and multiple playoff trips.
