Search for Missing Bike Riders Comes to Apparent End as 4 Male Bodies Are Pulled from an Oklahoma River

Days after a search began for four missing Oklahoma men, four bodies were found in the Deep Fork River near the town of Okmulgee and police suspect foul play was involved.

According to KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City, authorities had been looking for Mark Chastain, 32, Billy Chastain, 30, Mike Sparks, 32, and Alex Stevens, 29, who were reported missing Monday.

The four were last seen on bikes leaving Billy Chastain’s home.

The bodies were found Friday afternoon.

“A passer-by saw something suspicious in the water and called headquarters,” Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice said, according to Gray News.

A report from NBC News on the case is below:

“Officials responded and appeared to discover several human remains in the river [but] we don’t know yet that these are our missing men,” Prentice said, according to KFOR.

“If these four missing men are found to be the remains in the river, the focus of our investigation will shift from their search to what happened to them. [But] if they’re not, we’re back to square one,” Prentice continued.

Was there foul play involved in these missing men?

Although no official identification has been made, Prentice notified the families of the missing men.

“At this time we are unable to make an identification, but out of respect we will inform the families before it is officially announced,” he said.

As of Friday, he said, “We have more questions than answers.”

Prentice said the cause of death was not yet known, but noted that the location of the remains could indicate foul play, according to Tulsa World.

Okmulgee is about 35 miles south of Tulsa.

According to CNN, Prentice said Saturday that none of the bikes the men were riding have been found.

He stressed that cellphone data doesn’t necessarily indicate where the men were traveling, according to CNN.

CNN described the men as close friends. The New York Post reported that the two Chastains are brothers.

Cellphone data with the group suggests they went to two junkyards — one five miles from the river and the other twice that distance, according to CNN.

Prentice said the data prompted police to search in that direction, rather than the area where the bodies were found.

WABI reported that there was a heavy police presence at a junkyard after the bodies were found.

“Officers continue to review previously obtained digital evidence and await phone transcripts of search warrants while we await identification,” Prentice said in a Facebook post on Saturday.
