TORONTO (WIVB) — The National Bank Open, also known as the Canadian Open, announced its roster Thursday. The list includes Jessica Pegula, daughter of Bills and Sabers owners Terry and Kim Pegula, and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.
The NBO returns after almost three years and will take place from August 6th to 14th. According to the NBO website, 41 of the top 43 ranked WTA players will take part in the tournament, including Pegula who is currently ranked eighth in the world. First place winner Iga Swiatek from Poland will also take part in the event.
As for Williams, she used her protected leaderboard to enter the tournament’s main draw. A three-time Canadian Open winner, Williams placed second at the 2019 event behind Canadian-born Bianca Andreescu, who will compete as a wild card at this year’s event.
The Canadian Open is the tournament closest to Buffalo on the current WTA calendar and probably the best opportunity for West New Yorkers, Pegula and Williams to see play. For a full list of competitors, click here.
The event precedes the US Open, which runs from August 29 to September 11.
