Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was attacked by fans on Twitter following his dismal performance in the team’s 2-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday (15 January). The French goalkeeper was to blame for the Gunners’ opener.
Bukayo Saka sliced inside down the right side in the 14th minute and had few chances other than an attempt on goal. The Spurs captain should have easily saved his cross shot. However, Lloris fumbled the ball into his own goal in an embarrassing moment for the Frenchman.
Things didn’t get much better for Lloris as Martin Odegaard got in a fierce shot in the 36th minute that he was unable to alter. He made four saves during the game but looked nervous throughout. His performance contrasted with that of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who was awarded the Man of the Match award for his performance.
Manchester United legend Gary Neville described Lloris’ mistake as bad, commenting for Sky Sports:
“There’s a little distraction, I think of Sessegnon, which I still think they need to do better at that near post. Watching it here as he kicks his right foot, I’m pretty sure there’s a distraction and Lloris, that’s just so poor.”
“He started out shaky with his feet, Lloris, and he’s now moved on with his hands. Some might say there’s a deflection there that might give him bigger problems, but that’s something he’ll have to deal with. It’s not good enough.”
Meanwhile, former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live:
“Saka’s run is brilliant. It’s a bad goalkeeper from Lloris. He hits him in the net. It’s another goalkeeping mistake. Bad of him.”
The win for Arsenal takes Mikel Arteta’s side to 47 points and put them eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City after 18 games. Tottenham’s situation is becoming increasingly worrying as they sit fifth and five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
However, Lloris’ performance is the one that sets fans apart from the Tottenham team in particular. Here are some reactions from supporters on Twitter:
Neville praised Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka’s performance against Tottenham
Neville was full of praise for Arsenal winger Saka, who he says destroyed Totteham in the north London derby. The England striker was crucial in the Gunners’ opener and caused nightmares in Antonio Conte’s defence. The former Manchester United captain said in Sky Sports’ commentary:
“He’s giving them nightmares on this side Saka, the confidence is really high.”
He later added:
“Saka destroyed them. They don’t know how to deal with him. It is a pleasure to watch him.”
Saka has been in red-hot form this season, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 24 appearances in all competitions. He lays claim to being one of the Premier League’s finest talents.
