Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans was quick to protect quarterback Tom Brady Sunday afternoon. New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore got into a verbal altercation with Brady and running back Leonard Fournette. Evans, already nearing the touchline, ran back onto the field and knocked Lattimore to the ground. His actions then saw the benches cleared as players from both touchlines became involved.
Speaking to FOX’s “Undisputed” Hall of Famer this week, Shannon Sharpe expressed his feelings about the situation. Sharpe said he felt Tom Brady was the one escalating the fight. He said he knew his teammates would be quick to defend his honor if he found himself in an altercation with Lattimore.
“You can’t say, ‘That was Tom Brady’. Tom Brady was to blame because he escalated it. There was a reason Tom threw iPads, there was a reason he cursed Skip for the guys he threw Wenn So you put your guy in danger, you know he’s going to defend you because you’re Tom Brady.”
Sharpe then went on to say that the wideout was already struggling with a calf injury he sustained in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. It’s probably not the best idea for someone already struggling with an injury.
Both Lattimore and Evans were penalized for unnecessary rudeness and kicked out of the game.
Has Bucs WR Mike Evans been suspended for his role in the fight?
On Monday afternoon, the National Football League announced that Mike Evans will be suspended for one game. The wide receiver was the only suspension from the fight, with the NFL saying fines would also be issued. While fines have not been specified at this time, Marshon Lattimore is also expected to be fined for his part.
Evans appealed the suspension, but on Wednesday the NFL denied the appeal. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady will be without their number one offensive weapon this week against the Green Bay Packers. The wide receiver has been suspended for an altercation with Lattimore in the past, and the league is clearly issuing a statement that such behavior will not be tolerated.
The suspension comes at a crucial time for the Buccaneers, who are already injured in the wide receiving room. Both Chris Godwin and Julio Jones missed Sunday’s game and are unlikely to play this week. As the Bucs prepare to host the Green Bay Packers this week, the team added veteran wide receiver Cole Beasley to the practice squad in hopes he plays this week.
