Shreveport Is Top 20 In Cities For Highest Unemployment In The US

The job market in the United States today looks very different than it did at this point in 2020. We are now on the reverse side of the COVID-19 pandemic and the US unemployment rate has been surprisingly low. In fact, the national unemployment rate has been so low that it challenges the traditional definition of a “recession” in the economy.

A look at the June 2022 unemployment figures shows how far the US has come since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the economy the hardest. Personal finance website WalletHub has been tracking changes in unemployment across the 180 largest cities in the US since the pandemic began. They used key metrics to track the changes the nation and individual cities saw.

For June 2022 unemployment figures, the national average is 3.6%, which is 76% below the April 2020 COVID unemployment peak. That kind of impact is seen even in a city like Shreveport, even with the current unemployment numbers aren’t great.

Compared to June 2020 unemployment numbers, Shreveport’s most recent unemployment rate is down 58%. Looking ahead to June 2021, Shreveport’s unemployment rate is down 35% compared to the most recent data.

However, if you look at the comparison between May 2022 and June 2022, a different picture emerges. Unemployment in the city rose 22% month-on-month. The latest unemployment figure for Shreveport is 5.6%.

Shreveport’s unemployment rate isn’t the worst in the country, but it’s on the low end. Here are the top 20 cities for unemployment rate:
