Sky High: The Series Season 1 Recap

There are no spoilers in this review of the Netflix series Sky High: The Series Season 1.

Anyone who saw the 2020 Netflix Movie sky high will know what to expect Sky High: The Series, and not just because of the ridiculously flashy title. It brings back some of the same actors and characters, and mostly scratches the same itch for straightforward action fare. Asking if this was even a property worth carrying on is another matter. If you enjoyed the film, the series offers more of the same, just in a slightly meatier package.

Sky High: The Series Season 1 recap and plot synopsis

The plot picks up exactly where the end of the movie leave things. Sole is devastated to have received a phone call informing her of the loss of Angel and blaming her not only for a son but also for a notorious gang – one with some outstanding debts that may later prove troublesome . Estrella remains very dead, and this matter is brought up throughout the series, giving Sole something to feel guilty about as she tries to take control of her new life and steer its dangers and responsibilities away from her established fence father, Rogelio.

while watching sky high, the movie, I never thought it would be better if it lasted seven episodes, and it turns out I was right not to. The makers of Sky High: The Series completely overestimate the appeal of this material and these characters, and the pacing is reduced to a crawl to compensate for the lengthy drama, which is exceptionally difficult to nurture. All the usual hallmarks of the genre are here, but far too widespread or lazily implemented to even have the same appeal as the film. That felt over-complicated, but most importantly, entertaining; that feels over-complicated and cripplingly boring.

As mentioned above, fans of the film can still be happy about the return of characters like Sole and Rogelio; they may still enjoy the simple pleasures of doubles, action scenes, and secret agents and agencies. However, those invested in the storyline will no doubt feel frustrated, especially since sky high seems to have been fishing for several seasons and is in no hurry to add something noteworthy to the world.

Is Sky High: The Series any good?

So, it’s a shrug for existing fans, but it’s hard to imagine that anything about this series would truly excite those who haven’t fully bought this story and its characters. There are some slight joys, of course, but in such a competitive market it’s hard to justify the investment of time this series will demand of you and the cynicism behind its apparent quest for an undeserved sequel.
