Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets were ahead against the Milwaukee Bucks in the third quarter when Steve Nash was kicked out. Nash earned his first technical foul after complaining to the referee for calling a foul on Patty Mills, who was hit by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s elbow.
The ejection came as Nash heatedly lunged at the referee, who attacked him with the first technique. Here’s what Kevin Durant had to say when asked if he’s ever seen the normally quiet coach this angry:
“Yeah, I mean we watched him play for 20 years. I saw him talking shit to the umpires. Went on the pitch with him when he was talking crazy to the referees. In my first few years Steve used to talk so crazy to the judges. When he didn’t get a tech as a coach, I’m like, “Where’s the shit?” He’s lively.”
The Brooklyn Nets held a four-point lead in the third quarter with four and a half minutes remaining. In front of Steve Nash and the referee, Giannis Antetokounmpo tried to create space with his elbow. Patty Mills, still moving slightly sideways, got the hit and was called for a foul.
Nash’s throw seemed to cheer the Bucks on as they dominated the Nets 44-29 from then until the final whistle. Milwaukee trailed 12 points early in the second half and had no response for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. However, they fought their way back into the game in the third period.
Durant ended his comments on Steve Nash’s sacking with this:
“You treat yourself differently as a coach. But sometimes you just want to go out and fight for your boys and he did that tonight.
Steve Nash rarely showed emotion last season, even when they were thrashed by the Boston Celtics. When the Celtics bullied and played very physically against the Nets, Nash kept his composure throughout the series.
This could be the coach’s new way of heating up his team when they start playing slacked basketball like they did on Wednesday night. If the breakout was intentional, then it didn’t help much, at least on the night Kevin Durant and co. suffered a 110-99 loss.
Steve Nash could be in the hot seat ahead of Thanksgiving if Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets continue to falter
The Brooklyn Nets are now 3-1 after losing to the Milwaukee Bucks. In their only win of the season so far, they had to scrape past the Toronto Raptors. If they enter Thanksgiving below .500, Steve Nash could face the axe.
Just about a month ago, Kevin Durant reportedly asked team owner Joe Tsai to fire the coach. There were also rumors that players were grumbling about how badly Nash was passed by suspended Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka.
Tsai mostly stood by Nash and probably because he wanted to prove something to Durant. He would not and could not give in to KD’s demands to fire Nash as he wanted to take control of his franchise.
However, if the Brooklyn Nets don’t turn things around, the billionaire could be forced to drop the Hall of Fame’s point guard.
The Nets are desperate to make things work this season. This is likely Irving’s final season in Brooklyn and Joe Tsai would love to see something special from his superstar duo.
Steve Nash could start showing more vivacity as he and the Nets struggle to turn their season around.
