SP Hinduja, patriarch of one of Britain’s wealthiest families, dies aged 87

The patriarch of one of Britain’s wealthiest families has died aged 87, according to his family.
Businessman Srichand Hinduja, whose family was included in the Sunday Times 2022 list of the rich and is believed to be worth more than £28 billion, “passed away peacefully” on Wednesday and was being “cared for” by relatives, a family spokesman said.
The spokesman described Mr. Hinduja, known as SP, as a “visionary titan of industry and business”.
Mr Hinduja became the focus of a feud between relatives after he was diagnosed with dementia
He was at the center of a case before the Court of Protection in London, where judges deal with issues raised by people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions.
SP was a visionary titan of industry and business, humanitarian and philanthropic
The case made headlines in November 2022 after a judge said he had considered placing Mr Hinduja in a public nursing home at some point in the trial.
Mr Judge Hayden said Mr Hinduja’s needs had been “marginalized” by a family dispute despite his wealth.
He said at one point he came to the conclusion that Mr Hinduja should leave the hospital, but said that despite the “extraordinary size and reach of their financial capacity”, the relatives were unable to find private accommodation.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father, SP Hinduja,” the family spokesman said in a statement.
“SP was a visionary titan of industry and business, humanitarian and philanthropic.”
The Hinduja Group conglomerate spans much of the world and deals in everything from banking and oil to automotive, healthcare and cybersecurity.
SP will be remembered for his great contributions that helped bring India and its culture to the global stage
The company was founded in India more than a century ago, but was forced out of Iran for decades before the revolution in the 1970s forced it to relocate to Britain.
Mr Hinduja was catapulted into the limelight in the early days of Tony Blair’s prime ministership when Labor MPs were accused of lobbying to help him gain British citizenship.
Peter Mandelson was forced to resign as Minister of Northern Ireland at the time.
In a statement, the family said: “SP went through life with deep humility and dignity, always striving to bring people together in the common interest. He touched countless lives along the way and we are eternally grateful for the time we shared with him.
“Amongst other things, SP will be remembered for the great contributions he has made to bringing India and its culture to the global stage through his work and philanthropic efforts.
“SP passed away peacefully this morning being cared for by members of his family and we are at peace knowing that in the afterlife he will be reunited with his beloved wife and son.”
