St. Landry Parish Superintendent Named Superintendent of the Year

OPELOUSAS, La. (KPEL News) — St. Landry Parish Superintendent Patrick Jenkins is the state’s top superintendent, according to the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents (LASS).

Jenkins was named the 2023 Louisiana Superintendent of the Year by LASS for several growth areas in the district. The award is part of a program to recognize “outstanding leadership by active frontline superintendents,” the St. Landry Parish School District (SLPSD) said in a news release.

Jenkins was named Superintendent of the Year at the annual LASS conference in Baton Rouge.

“I am so honored and humbled to have been named Louisiana Superintendent of the Year,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Serving as Superintendent at St. Landry Parish is a dream come true. St. Landry Parish is where I came from. I was raised and educated there. This place holds a special place in my heart , and I have a strong longing for the pedagogical successes that we can achieve here.”

Jenkins has been Superintendent of the SLPSD for six years. Since its acquisition, the county has gone from a “C” to a “B” and has the best growth of any county in the state.

SLPSD has also increased qualifying scores on AP exams by 4.2 percentage points and expanded dual enrollment through a partnership with LSU-A.

“I’m very proud of the work we’ve done and the change we’ve created for the children and the community we serve,” he said. “I am very aware that I am privileged to receive this award because of the incredibly hard work of everyone in and around our dynamic district. Thank you to my supportive family, the amazing SLPSD team and to LASS for this once in a lifetime opportunity. a lifetime honor.”
