Stockton Market trader creates a Gazza-inspired cake

John The Pieman, who runs Just Love Pies, is a fixture at Stockton Market, selling his delicious food every week. However, he has now produced a new and unique product after meeting the former Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Rangers and Tottenham player.

On Saturday (September 30), John was selling his usual cakes when he spotted Gazza from across Stockton Market, having his photo taken with the former midfielder and chatting to the Geordie icon.

Now, more than a week after the chance encounter, John has created a cake that he says sums up Gazza and his exploits – or should we say advertising campaigns.

After racking his brain about what he could create, the Stockton Market stall owner initially thought of Magpie and Ale as a nod to his former team Newcastle United – but he joked that he couldn’t catch any Magpies so he had to go with it to be content with his second choice; Mars bars.

The unique idea for a cake came after John looked through photos of Gazza and found pictures of him with bundles of Mars bars around him.

In an online post, John explained his thought process behind the new cake.

He said: “I met Paul Gascoigne last Saturday – it was quite an occasion to meet the most famous English footballer of all time so I thought I would create a cake in his honour.”

“Unfortunately I was a bit at a loss. So I asked the question and there were quite a few answers. A particularly good one was a magpie ale cake. Pretty fitting.”

“Newcastle United are known as the Magpies and Gazza was known for enjoying a pint of ale. Unfortunately I couldn’t find my catapult or any magpies.”

“So I googled it and found a photo of him holding a bunch of Mars bars. Apparently he’s a fan of this delicious chocolate treat, so I made a Mars Bar cake in honor of Paul Gascoigne.”

“At the end of the day, who doesn’t love Gazza and who doesn’t love a Mars Bar?”

So there we have it, there is now a Paul Gascoigne inspired cake at Stockton Market; a Mars Bar cake.
