Labor has demanded that Rishi Sunak let Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs ‘get in’.
Deputy leader Angela Rayner said the Prime Minister must reveal what he knew about Mr Zahawi’s settlement with HM Revenue & Customs when he appointed him leader of the Conservative Party last October.
She also requested the release of all correspondence with No. 10 prior to Mr Zahawi’s various appointments, to clarify whether he was chancellor at the time of the settlement and to explain how his conduct conformed with the ministerial code.
Mr Zahawi, who is a member of Mr Sunak’s cabinet, has admitted to settling a dispute with tax authorities after a “negligent” error related to a stake in polling agency YouGov, which he co-founded.
Rishi Sunak does not deliver the integrity, professionalism and accountability that he promisedAngela Rayner
Pressure has mounted on the embattled Tory leader amid claims Cabinet Office officials brought the matter to the attention of then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson before he appointed Mr Zahawi as Chancellor.
The Sun on Sunday reported that he was due to be knighted in the New Year’s Honors List but was later blocked over concerns about his tax situation.
Ms Rayner said: “Rishi Sunak can no longer maintain his deafening silence on the Nadhim Zahawi tax scandal.
“The Prime Minister must now clarify what and when he knew about Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs and the concerns raised in connection with Number 10. The public has a right to know whether warnings have been ignored and a man unfit for knighthood has been repeatedly appointed to the Cabinet.
“This entire episode is eroding public confidence as a chancellor in charge of the nation’s finances is asking the public to pay their taxes even though he appears not to have done so himself.
“Rishi Sunak is not delivering the integrity, professionalism and accountability that he promised.
“It is his responsibility to decontaminate his scandal-ridden cabinet by setting out clearly the steps he has taken to ensure that all ministers’ tax affairs are in order, weed out bad tax behavior and reassured the public.”
