Aakash Chopra has recently cited Mohammad Nabi’s so-so form as one of Afghanistan’s weaknesses en route to the T20 World Cup.
Nabi will captain the Asian nation in the global T20 spectacle which begins in Australia today (16 October). The spin bowling all-rounder didn’t have a good time with bat and ball at the Asian Cup and is hoping to do better at the World Cup.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the Afghan captain’s poor form as a concern. He stated:
“What are the weaknesses of this team? Mohammad Nabi’s form. His form has dropped a lot, both in bowling and in batting. He has not been consistent at all, which is a problem. When a captain’s own form drops, decisions become weak. These So the concern remains.”
Chopra singled out the lack of a rapid pacemaker as another of Afghanistan’s weaknesses. The former India opener pointed out:
“There’s no lurid pacer, they’ve got pacers that bowl at 80-85 mph; there’s no one who can bowl at 90-90 mph. It’s a little surprising because when you see the Afghanistan belt, you feel like there should be bowlers who can bowl at 145-150 km/h.”
Chopra added that circumstances in the country have not helped her cause. He observed:
“The cricket structure couldn’t flourish there; there is some helplessness and difficulty, but I think that’s definitely their weakness.”
Afghanistan relies primarily on its cranks – Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Nabi in the bowling department. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq are expected to be their frontline sailors in the tournament.
‘They have no experience playing in Australia’ – Aakash Chopra on Afghanistan’s other weakness
Chopra pointed out that Afghanistan’s lack of experience playing games Down Under and against impressive teams could also prove to be a stumbling block. The renowned commentator said:
“They have no experience playing in Australia. That’s another problem; they have extremely limited experience playing against big teams. So those are some obvious weaknesses that I see.”
Afghanistan has never played Australia. They’ve also played just one and two games respectively in the shortest format against New Zealand and England, but came up short on all three occasions.
Poll: Will Afghanistan beat at least one of Australia, England or New Zealand in the 2022 T20 World Cup?
