“Team India would have been happier if they had won the game by 3-4 wickets down.”

Wasim Jaffer reckons that while Team India won the Kolkata ODI against Sri Lanka fairly easily, they would have been happier if they had lost fewer wickets in the chase. The former opener indicated there have been some soft layoffs that the hosts could have avoided.

The Men in Blue defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in their second one-dayer at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, January 12. India, bowling first after losing the toss, held the lankers at 215 and chased the goal in 43.2 overs, losing six wickets.

With the triumph in Kolkata, Team India also secured the three-game series 2-0. While praising the team’s bowling performance, Jaffer felt the batters could have been more clinical. In a discussion about ESPNcricinfohe commented:

“On the batting front, Team India would have been happier if they had won the game by 3-4 wickets. It went down to the sixth wicket. More than a few would have been gentle layoffs that they would happily forget. All in all, “A strong performance. The bowling was outstanding. And if KL gets back on form, Team India will be happy about it.”

India chased 216 and were four points behind with 86 in the 15th over. KL Rahul (64*) and Hardik Pandya (36 of 53) then raised the batting side with a fifth wicket record of 75. Axar Patel also interfered with a run-a-ball 21 as Sri Lanka regretted a poor batting effort.

“Kuldeep Yadav should be on the white ball team every time” – Wasim Jaffer praises Team India Spinner

Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was drafted into the starting XI after Yuzvendra Chahal’s unfitness, once again took his chance with both hands. He claimed 3/51 and was named Player of the Match. Jaffer praised the 28-year-old, commenting:

“I always stress that Kuldeep Yadav should be on the white ball team every time India plays. He’s proved his point. For someone who barely gets a game, it’s very hard for them to come back and keep performing every time they get that limited opportunity. He’s so good at it.

“In white ball cricket, there aren’t many batsmen who can googly and leg spin really well. So it’s not surprising that Kuldeep is so effective. It’s encouraging to see. If I had to pick someone to take wickets in the middle overs, I would pick Kuldeep.

Kuldeep got the big wickets from Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka to break the back of Sri Lanka’s drummer.
