Ted Lasso is a brilliant show. I love it, you love it, lots of people love it. It was the uplifting TV series we all needed during the trying days of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to take shelter in our own homes.
While the multi-award-winning Apple TV Plus show continues to be one of the biggest TV hits of modern times, it wasn’t immune to troubles off the field — particularly during the development of Ted Lasso Season 3.
That’s why the recent teasing that Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond might be coming to FIFA 23 feels like a red herring.
Yesterday (September 20), Ted Lasso’s official Twitter account hinted that the fan-favorite soccer coach would be included in the final installment of EA’s long-running soccer franchise. The tweet hinted that Ted and company would be appearing in a soccer-based video game in the near future – the “Watch out, Mario!” tag gave that away. But it was a reply from the official FIFA Twitter account that all but confirmed the arrival of Ted and AFC Richmond in the upcoming match; FIFA’s social media team just follows with the eye emoji:
Bringing Ted, his colleagues and the AFC Richmond first team to FIFA is a logical and fascinating move. It’s high time the Apple TV Plus series was recognized for its status as a global phenomenon in other industries. With EA ending its licensing deal with FIFA – the pair failed to reach an agreement to extend their 30-year partnership – now that their current deal has expired, it’s the perfect time to see Richmond take on real clubs in the world’s biggest soccer games -Franchises too.
However, the teasing seems to be more than just a coincidence. Okay, FIFA 23 is less than a week away from release (at the time of writing), with the soccer title set to release on Tuesday 27th September. So, hinting at Ted and Richmond’s arrival a week before the game’s release could simply be a marketing strategy to generate interest in the game and the show before the latter’s final season arrives.
However, there’s no denying that Ted Lasso’s possible appearance in FIFA 23 is more than just a coincidence. After all, it comes just days after a report claimed that the show’s third season had major development problems.
According to news agency Puck (opens in new tab), Ted Lasso Season 3 has been plagued with – to use football-based terminology – board and management issues. The report indicated that significant script rewrites, character arc shifts, lost filming days and filming difficulties at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge Stadium have resulted in an endless cycle of stop-start production that is beginning to wear out the show’s cast and crew. The cast of Ted Lasso are reportedly signed until the series is completed, meaning they won’t be able to pursue any other projects or acting opportunities until production is complete.
Production costs are also reportedly starting to cause problems. A source told Puck that the third season of Ted Lasso was already 20 to 30 percent over budget, leading to Apple and Warner Bros. Television falling out over who would pay for the filming — and the series’ lengthy post-production phase — would have to fill out.
The ambiguity surrounding the end date of Ted Lasso season 3 also means there’s no release date yet, and that’s a big problem for Apple. Ted Lasso is the crown jewel in his streaming back catalogue, and the longer fans have to wait for the third and possibly final season, the more likely they are to become frustrated and turn to Netflix shows, Prime Video series and offerings on others Turn to platforms for their TV fix.
This is the first time in three years that a season of Ted Lasso will not also launch on Apple TV Plus – seasons 1 and 2 will be released in August 2020 and July 2021, respectively. And with the series’ cast unsure of when Season 3 will be released — co-writer and lead actor Jason Sudeikis recently told reporters (as reported by Puck) that it will appear “eventually” — there’s not much confidence in a start date anytime soon announced.
Things were still looking up for Ted Lasso on September 13 when the series won multiple gongs at the 2022 Primetime Emmys. Puck’s account has certainly rocked the ship, however, and it seems a fundamental lack of harmony is developing in Ted Lasso’s camp. At least if you believe the speculation.
So all of this makes Ted Lasso’s FIFA 23 tease seem like a way to put a positive spin on the show again after a rocky few days. From a cynic’s perspective, it’s a classic marketing or PR stunt to distract from negative publicity.
Of course, the tease could be just that: a random reference to characters from a popular TV show making their debut in a similarly popular video game series. It’s possible that this announcement would always come around this time of year, which has to do with FIFA 23’s upcoming release.
Still, it all feels a bit random. This is the first major test Ted Lasso really faces when it comes to getting negative press. So the probable confirmation that Ted and Co. are coming to FIFA is, in our view, more than just a coincidence.
