Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge Mobile Interview Working with Netflix and more

In 2022 I interviewed Playdigious about how he used Streets of Rage 4 for mobile. I’ve been working with Dead Cells a lot and more. After my life was great on Dead Cells (the GOTY released) and Streets of Rage 4, I was looking forward to watching one of my favorite movies, TMNT: Shredders Revenge. I had the chance to talk to Xavier Liard (Founder), Valentin Pezet (Producer) and Axel Dauvergne (Marketing Director) about the new version working with Netflix, premium games, subscriptions and more.

Xavier Liard: As I mentioned before, we were very excited to learn that Netflix is adding games to its services. We’ve heard about a lot of movies, but in this case it was the official one. Netflix has more than a million subscribers and has teamed up with them for TMNT Shredders Revenge to find a new approach to reach the widest audience. We’re taking some time to discuss this with everyone involved because we knew some players would have preferred the game to be a paid game. But not to mention diversifying distribution and reaching many other players and as a company we should try new possibilities and embrace the future.

TA: You brought some console and PC games for mobile, including some from Dotemu. What did it do with TMNT Shredders for iOS and Android?

Thank you for working with Dotemu and providing great games for mobile, especially when the IP is so strong it’s pretty strong. As far as this game is concerned, we have changed our attitude: Deliver an experience as faithful as possible on mobile as it used to be, we are satisfied with the results.

As you said it wasn’t our first rodeo with Dotemu, we also worked for Spiritfarer. This project breaks down into two main reasons: the addition of the Nickelodeon team to the equation. We have decided to propose a mobile version worthy of the TMNT name.

TA: Are there any additional hurdles in Revenge, especially in the porting process?

The biggest challenge was usually the multiplayer mode. Still, the team did an incredible job and players can play TMNT: Shredders Revenge with their friends on mobile. We even had to adjust our process because when we started learning how to connect to TMNT Shredders for mobile, the PC and console were under development. Usually we allow mobile games to adapt to games that have been previously released. This improved back and forth; Sometimes days of work can become obsolete because the game has changed. Dotemu always kept us updated to minimize unnecessary work.

TA: Can mobile players expect TMNT Shredders Revenge?

VP: Some of the UI changes to be visible on mobile. We’ve done it via touch, crossplay and such, bringing just an amazing experience on PC and console to mobile. We’ve traded the controller primarily when you can’t get touch controls.

TA: Is TMNT Shredder Revenge cross-platform?

I use mobile cross-play and that means iOS and Android players can play together.

TA: How much time has Netflix spent on the porting process and TMNT Shredders Revenge on mobile in general?

It was a pleasure working with them. We were the same throughout the process. The company has a very human approach and allows us to reach the masses while maintaining creative freedom.

TA: I like TMNT Shredders and own them on every platform. I was very pleased to hear it was notified via cellphone but not surprised to see it appear in Netflix games. Playdigious recently released Dead Cells+ on the Apple Arcade. As a premium mobile game developer releasing free games, how did your answer take me?

Axel Dauvergne: Our business remains high-end mobile games, whether they are in pay-to-play format or available on a subscription basis. We’ve seen players rejoice at these great games coming to their platform, no matter what the name is Spiritfarer and TMNT on Netflix or Dead Cells on Apple Arcade. Playdigious’ goal is to bring indie games to a wide audience on mobile devices. These subscription offers are useful, as are our pay-to-play activities.

I previously interviewed Subset Games for Into the Breach, which is one of my most searched iOS ports, and started using Netflix. Can we expect more premium conversions from Playdigious in subtraction?

XL aims to have as many premium and subscription games available as possible. When it comes to subscription-only offerings, this would be on a case-by-case basis and dependent on many factors, among other things, but we will continue to offer paid games, that’s always a tradition.

It was very well known to Xavier Liard (Founder), Valentin Pezet (Marketer), Axel Dauvergne (Marketing Director) and everyone else at Playdigious who had time here ahead of the release of TMNT: Shredders Revenge via Netflix Games this week.
