Terrible new sculpture unveiled in US city… How was this ever approved?

Just in time for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the city of Boston unveiled a new sculpture honoring the civil rights activist.
After WCVB TV, the statue was unveiled on Friday in a ceremony attended by dignitaries and members of the king’s family. The outlet described it as “the country’s largest memorial dedicated to racial justice.”
You would expect a moving and inspiring memorial. Maybe something like the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC
Well, think again. Instead, we received this as a tribute to one of the most famous Americans in history:
Please read my other tweets about the sculpture – but here’s a different angle and the photo of the two is based on The Embrace. When MLK Jr. found out he had won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. pic.twitter.com/Q7Vyk7OPKK

WCVB reported that the sculpture, dubbed “The Embrace,” is meant to represent the moment King embraced his wife after learning he had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and to commemorate his connection to Boston, where he received his Met wife while studying at Boston University.
The reactions on the internet were mostly negative.

Should have been beautiful and inspirational – instead it’s hideous and depressing.

A sculpture by Dr. King himself and even him and his wife would have been most suitable. They met in Boston. This “Hug” sculpture is very strange and represents Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is borderline disrespectful. Fire whoever did this😒

One Twitter user joked that the sculpture may have been created by a white supremacist to denigrate MLK’s legacy.
Yes, at first I thought it was a fake. Like a racist wanted to poke fun at MLK.

Honestly, it wouldn’t be surprising if it turned out to be the case.
King was one of the most important figures in the history of this country. He helped America fulfill the promise of its founding to all citizens, regardless of race.
This monument captures none of that. Instead of a proud homage to an American hero, we get a tangle of twisted shapes that make no sense and tell us nothing.
American heroes from George Washington to MLK deserve memorials that do justice to their contributions to this great nation. If we can’t give that to them, we risk losing whatever pride we have as a country.
