North Cornwall

1. Watergate Bay, Newquay

Two miles of golden sand surrounded by cliffs and caves where Atlantic waves bring reliable shore and peregrine falcons, gulls and fulmars. Spot strawberry anemones and crabs among the rock pools, stroll along the cliffs, or book a surfing or kitesurfing lesson at the excellent Extreme Academy on the beach. (

Dining: Emily Scott Food, both overlooking the beach, offers a low key and simple seafood menu, while The Beach Hut Bistro serves delicious fresh seafood – squid and moules frite are a must (

Where to Stay: The Watergate Bay Hotel has a spectacular indoor pool with sea views, lots of lovely public spaces, and the non-spa spa now offers treatments. Read the full review.

South Cornwall

2. Porthcurno, near Land’s End

Perched on the cliffs below the Minack Theatre, this is arguably the county’s prettiest cove: a funnel of sand trapped between lichen-covered granite boulders. It is easily accessible, has fine white sand and is popular with families. It’s best at low tide when you can walk to other beaches in the bay (one of which is naturist) and sit on sandbars beneath the ancient clifftop fortress of Treryn Dinas, surrounded by Greek-blue waters.
