‘The Bachelorette’ Finale Proves Why This Season Was a Failed Experiment

spoilers for The Bachelorette under.

In the wise words of Olivia Rodrigo: God, it’s brutal out here. That was the prevailing mood that emerged from Tuesday night’s three-hour live finale The Bachelorettewhich contained a series of harrowing events – some entertaining but many far from it.

Heading into the end of the season, two bachelorettes Rachel Reccia and Gaby Windy each had only one suitor who stood—Tino Franco and Eric Schwer, respectively. But given ABC’s decision to devote itself 5 hours (Last Tuesday was captioned part One) to the final and host Jess Palmer‘s ominous tone in front of the studio audience, viewers realized they were in for more than a couple Neil Lane-sponsored engagements.

In a bizarre, suspenseful move, Palmer kicked off the episode by revealing exactly which bombs were on the list. “Maybe tonight Tino can convince Rachel that his indiscretions were just a temporary misjudgment,” the moderator said. “And maybe Erich can explain those damn text messages he sent his girlfriend just days before he got out of the limousine on night one.”

The partially spoiled celebrations began with Recchia and Franco, whose engagement was aired alongside picture-in-picture footage of the Bachelorette and her dutiful parents reacting to the Lovey Dovey scene in real-time stoic agony. Minutes after their fairytale engagement ended, Palmer asked Recchia about the couple’s post-show challenges. While their separate lives and the secrecy of their engagement had caused an uproar, Recchia dropped the real bombshell just before the commercial break: “He cheated on me.”

Bachelor Nation was then treated to footage of Recchia and Windey meeting at an undisclosed location to discuss Franco’s infidelity some time ago. Recchia is understandably wounded and Windey is unabashedly supportive, but the real takeaway from their conversation is that our other Bachelorette is also engaged. During their conversation, which aired before Windey’s final rose, one can’t help but notice the giant sparkler on her ring finger, draining the juice from Schwer’s apparent resistance to a proposal.

Armed with a notebook and looking like he’s been cramming for a big test the night before, Franco comes into the pre-taped segment to talk to Recchia. But any goodwill immediately dissipates as the pair talk in a circle about — thank you, Ross and Rachel — whether or not they are had break when Franco kissed another woman. Franco reads from his notes and claims that Recchia is resistant to therapy and wants to return her engagement ring. Recchia, who often has his jaw dropped, begs Franco not to lie. At one point, he storms outside and tries to pick up his mic, begging a producer, “Tell her to break up with me. Let me out.”
