Another revelation is yodomo.co, a site featuring online workshops and kits from a curated selection of artists and craftspeople designed to help people like me unleash their inner creator. “Craft supplies can be pretty cheesy; I wanted to learn how to make the beautiful things you see on Instagram,” explains founder Sophie Rochester.
There’s no shame in cheating, I think, when you’re supporting a small business—and learning a new skill at the same time.
After a weekend of creativity and education at our home in London, here are 20 handmade Christmas decorating, gifting and wrapping ideas to try now that will hopefully put a smile on your loved ones’ faces.
The best craft ideas for the Christmas family
Design a disco ball for the tree
Emma Mapp’s elegant Christmas baubles, which she glues onto papier-mâché baubles from shiny leather leftovers from her camera bag business, prove that leftovers can also be used to make beautiful decorations. Plain cardboard balls are available from bakerross.co.uk; I previously decorated them with overlapping scraps of shiny Christmas wrapping paper, but you can also use strips of fabric – all you need is a glue gun or strong PVA. Now I cut corners using one of Mapp’s kits, which includes a papier-mâché ball and 60 shiny leather (or vegan leather) rounds, along with a set of instructions (£19.50, mappoflondon.uk).
Sew a gingerbread man decoration
If, like me, you like the idea of sewing but have a house full of projects you haven’t even started on yet, I highly recommend Miss Shelly. I completed her Gingerbread Man Christmas Decorating Kit in an hour. She had done the tedious part, sourcing the eyes, buttons, bow tie, stuffing and embroidery floss along with the felt she had cut into the right shape. Now the boys want me to make each of them one of their ninja bread men. Miss Shelly’s Gingerbread Man craft kit, for example, is £12.95 on etsy.com.
