As is known, the upcoming Netflix season of The crown emerges some incidents that the royal family would rather forget. It’s about the portrayal of Princess Diana’s death, as well as an additional review of the show following the recent death of Queen Elizabeth. The show’s fifth installment, which follows the royals’ 1992 story, will also recreate history’s worst moment Karl and Camilla‘s love story.
That would be the 1993 scandal now known as “Tampongate,” in which a private 1989 phone call between Charles and Camilla was leaked to the press. During the six-minute phone call, the lovers (both then married to other people) talk about their intimate relationship. At one point, Charles tells Camilla he’d like to “live” in her pants, before joking that he could be reincarnated as a tampon.
Josh O’Connorwho played in seasons three and four of The Future King The crownShe refused to reenact the scene. “When they offered me the role, one of my first questions was — I say questions, I think it was pretty much a statement — ‘We don’t do a tampon call,'” he previously told SirusXM’s EW Live. “[The Crown] was my only chance for my parents to see anything [I’ve acted in] without shame and I didn’t want to screw this up by talking about tampons on Netflix.
Dominic Westwho inherited the role in seasons five and six isn’t so lucky.
“I remember thinking it was something so dirty and deeply embarrassing [at the time],” he said Weekly entertainment of the conversation. “If you look back on it and have to play it, you realize that the fault wasn’t on those two people, two lovers having a private conversation. what is real [clear now] is how intrusive and obnoxious the attention of the press was that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape.” West, who has been embroiled in a dating controversy himself, continued, “I think , it made me very sympathetic to them both and what they went through.”
Olivia Williams will be the voice on the other end of the line, taking on the role of Camilla Emerald Fennel. West described his co-star as having “sympathy for Camilla,” adding, “We both felt like we wanted to do our characters justice. We felt that the odds of their relationship were a bit off and we wanted to try to portray them in as sympathetic a light as possible.”
The coming season – led by Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana – took a week off from filming in deference to the monarch’s recent death, which many stars learned of mid-production. Creator Pete Morgan said some level of empathy will be extended to all Windsors. “I think we all have to accept that the 1990s was a difficult time for the royal family and King Charles will almost certainly have some painful memories from that time,” he said Weekly entertainment. “But that doesn’t mean history will be unkind to him or the monarchy in hindsight. The show certainly isn’t.”
The crown‘s fifth season debuts on November 9th.
