The ‘disgraced’ George Santos announces he will be stepping down

George Santos’ saga continued as the embattled GOP freshman defied calls from his peers to resign over his fake background.
The New York Republican, who flipped a Democrat-held Long Island seat, has stood his ground despite the pressure and vowed to serve out his two-year term.
According to ABC reporter Lalee Ibssa on Twitter, Santos told journalists that he would do it if a certain number of people asked him to resign.
“If 142 people demand my resignation, I will resign,” the congressman declared while being followed by reporters.

Many were confused by the accuracy of that number, but Santos later clarified, according to ABC reporter Will Steakin.
Santos tells me he said “142,000 voters who voted for me” should demand his resignation.
“The elevator cut that off,” he said.
He said “no” when I asked him if that means he won’t resign.

Should George Santos resign?
Santos won his seat thanks to the more than 142,000 people who voted for him in last year’s midterm elections, and he was the one he referred to before the “elevator cut that” comment was abbreviated.
As reported by Yahoo NewsSantos stated that he will stay in his post “until those same 142,000 people tell me they don’t want me”.
Those comments come after local GOP officials in Long Island held a news conference on Wednesday condemning the Third Circuit representative.
“His campaign over the past year has been a campaign of deceit, lies and falsification,” said Joseph Cairo, chair of the Nassau County GOP committee.

“He disgraced the House of Representatives, and we do not consider him one of our congressmen…Today, on behalf of the Nassau County Republican Committee, I am calling for his immediate resignation.”
Santos found himself in boiling water after it was revealed his resume and background were not what they appeared to be.
The revelations began with a New York Times article suggesting that Santos had lied about his accomplishments.
As specified by the New York Postthe resume states that Santos earned an economics/finance degree from Baruch College, where he had a 3.89 GPA and was top of his class.
Santos also claimed he worked at Goldman Sachs for eight months, where he boasted of doubling his department’s earnings as a project manager.
It was all made up.
He even lied about his Judaism ancestry.
Needless to say, many of Santos’ supporters who guided him to victory feel a little betrayed.
“The lies George Santos told are too numerous to count,” Jen DeSena, head of North Hempstead, told Yahoo.
“He personally lied to me when he sought my consent, and while I am offended and disgusted by his deception, my real concern is for the residents of the third congressional district.”
DeSena continued her denunciation, berating Santos’ “shallow and insulting responses” when harassed about his lies.
“He has betrayed the public’s trust and provided disingenuous, superficial and abusive responses when asked legitimate questions about his finances and background… From all appearances, he seems unable and unwilling to accept full responsibility for his lies and fabrications.” to take over.”
According to Yahoo, Santos is facing a likely ethics probe from his housemates, with members of both parties targeting his untrue records.
“This is not a partisan issue,” said Democratic House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries. “But that’s a problem Republicans have to deal with. Clean up your house.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was less harsh in his approach to the beleaguered newcomer.
“Voters voted for George Santos,” McCarthy argued. “If there are concerns, he will go through with it [the Ethics Committee]. If something is found, it will be treated in this way. But they have a voice in this process.”
