This short but touching documentary about young Australian trans activist Georgie Stone strikes an excellent balance between the difficulties she has faced and the victories she has celebrated.

The Netflix documentary The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone was released on September 23, 2022.

Georgie Stone is an incredible young woman. She is an actress, author and trans rights activist and was the youngest person in Australia to be on hormone blockers. She and her family have not only fought for their right to transition, but also for the right of all trans children across Australia to make choices about their own bodies and lives. She also starred and helped conceive a trans character on the popular Australian soap opera Neighbors in an effort to create a visible trans character for people to connect with.

Georgie’s incredible life makes it unsurprising that a documentary about her would be compelling. The short 29 minutes The Dream Life of Georgie Stone chronicles her life up to her time in the hospital where she underwent her gender confirmation surgery at the age of eighteen. The documentary combines footage of her at many different ages to create a portrait of her growth.

The film highlights her activism work on behalf of trans children and against bullying as well as her court case. But what really sets it apart is how it combines those with more personal moments. We see that Georgie had the support of her parents, especially her mother, and her twin brother. A touching interview with him as a kid sees him say he thinks it’s more fun having a girl around than just two boys because it means they can play a girl and a boy superhero .

The documentary is incredibly well edited, combining a lot of home videos with clips of her in the hospital. The editing often results in beautiful parallels to her life. The documentary does a great job of giving the viewer enough information to understand Georgie’s situation without wasting time over-explaining anything. It is honest about their struggles as well as their victories without glossing over anything or over-dramatizing anything.

Netflix documentation The Dream Life of Georgie Stone is impressive how much it can do in its short runtime. It paints the portrait of an impressive young woman who has already achieved a great deal, despite the fact that the odds were often against her. Well edited and put together, it’s a compelling watch whether you’ve heard of Georgie before or not.
