The girls on the back turns the usual girl trip formula on its head by not being a comedy, and also obscures the premise of impending disaster. Because the annual week-long vacation taken by Carol, Olga, Alma, Sara and Leo — five friends in their thirties who have been best friends since sixth grade — may be their last, as one of them is diagnosed with cancer.

The show makes a mystery who is sick. The girls made a pact not to talk about it – even if they shave their heads in solidarity, meaning it comes up all the time – and we only find out who dies in the final episode. The Girls at the Back ending explained

The first of these is a lesbian experience, which is quite a start. The second is getting high from drugs, which is comparatively tame. But the third is committing a crime, and the fourth and fifth are the greatest challenges of all – clearing up unfinished business and telling the truth.

Of course, some of these scenarios are designed to encourage funny moments, but some are also clearly designed to unleash long-dormant emotions and dynamics of what’s out there The girls on the back its sharpness.

As a sideline, when we finally learn that it is Leo who has cancer, we also learned that in their experiences with this journey, the women have all prepared themselves for a different kind of journey, as the transition to chemotherapy presents new challenges the shopping center has them ready for them. Trying to sort out their unfinished business, they find closure with an old friend, Palo, who had become distant from the rest of the group, while allowing Alma and Sara’s feelings for each other to come to the fore. None of these subplots have an entirely happy ending, however, but such is life, and the show’s less-than-idealistic slant keeps it grounded.

And it’s that grounding that means everything isn’t resolved in time for the finale. And it shouldn’t be. The girls in the back presents honest relationships full of suppressed feelings, guilt, confusion, love, passion and self-discovery; far too much to ever properly unpack on a trip. The adage that the journey is more important than the destination applies here more than ever, because there really is no destination; The journey is all we have.
