Another highest-paying job that doesn’t require a degree is ethical hacking, a position that involves studying an organization’s cybersecurity framework. Project managers and operational roles on oil rigs can also offer tens of thousands of pounds more than college degree positions.
Commercial pilot training is available to those without a degree and can lead to lucrative careers, Adzuna said, although the significant flight school costs required for that career might preclude it for many.
Meanwhile, food safety inspectors fetch an average salary of £48,003. While they require specific food safety certifications, they don’t necessarily require a degree.
Adzuna’s Andrew Hunter said: “This is a year of financial opportunity for unqualified job seekers. For many positions, self-taught skills are more important than formal education, particularly in emerging sectors such as IT, retail and construction.
“As more high-paying careers become available to school-leavers, the high price associated with continuing education weighs heavily, and we expect more job seekers will choose the non-academic route. Unqualified workers are an important segment of the labor market that more employers want to tap into.”
As Telegraph Money reports, it is not usually just a degree that increases earnings. The type of degree and the grade can have a big impact. A fashion degree offers you the lowest earning potential; Graduates earn just £23,832, about £1,168 less than the average non-graduate salary, according to jobs website Adzuna. Film graduates earn on average £24,878, Philosophy graduates £25,428, English Studies 26,143 and Criminology graduates £26,311.
