Many of us remember this wild short feud between Jason Aldeans woman, brittany, and Maren Morris.
For those who don’t, here’s what happened… from the start:
Brittany posted a video on her Instagram doing makeup and thanking her parents for not changing her gender when she was going through her “tomboy phase” as a child:
“I really want to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I was going through my tomboy phase. I love this girl life”
Country singer Cassadee Pope tweeted in response to Aldean’s post, saying:
“You’d think celebs with beauty brands would see the positives in including LGBTQ+ people in their messaging.
But instead, here we hear someone comparing their “tomboy phase” to someone wishing to transition. Really nice.”
And then Maren Morris replied to the tweet:
“It’s so easy not to be a scumbag? Sell your clip-ons and snap them up, Riot Barbie.”
Aldean then retaliated for the “riot Barbie” comments by posting a clothesline with the line “Don’t step on our children” to raise money for the non-profit Operation Light Shine, which fights child exploitation and human exploitation human trafficking contributes :
Aldean also appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show FOX, where he called Maren Morris a “mad country music guy” So Morris had a clothesline made with this saying, and the proceeds went to a couple of transgender nonprofits:
Needless to say, it was interesting to watch both sides go about it…to say the least. It just doesn’t happen that much in country music.
Which is actually kind of refreshing to see the whole “country music is one big happy family” facade being turned on its head… because it’s dead wrong, no matter how much the awards love that narrative.
But yesterday Morris said so LA times that she probably wouldn’t attend this year’s CMA Awards because she feels the same way “uncomfortable” to be there after the feud with Brittany Aldean and say:
“Honestly, I haven’t decided yet if I’m going. I am very honored that my record is nominated. But I don’t know if I feel at home there right now.
So many people I love will be in this room, and maybe I’ll make a decision at game time and leave. But right now I’m not comfortable with it.
I think last year I was sadder. Some nights are fun. Others just crawl out of my skin. I’m not good at events like this because I’m clumsy. But this time I feel kind of peaceful about not going.”
She added that she’s tired of defending country music, comparing it to an abusive relationship and noting that she feels like the country music community is divided into two different teams (much like the political world).
“Sometimes I feel like I’m in this abusive relationship, and I keep defending it: ‘It’s not all bad!’
But sometimes you have to call it what it is.”
Needless to say, her comments drew a multitude of comments from around the Twitter world.
And of course it was a mixed bag:
