Chelsea right-back Reece James has broken his silence as he claimed he could miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup through injury.
The England international gained weight Twitter to let people know he is keen to recover in time to make it to Qatar for world football’s biggest flagship event. The Chelsea full-back said:
“The race against time has begun… But we will not give up.”
As Sky Sports reported on Saturday, James is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks with a knee problem. As such, his place in England’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which is set to start on November 20, is now in doubt.
The Englishman picked up the injury in the Blues’ 2-0 win over AC Milan in midweek’s UEFA Champions League.
James had to be replaced by skipper Cesar Azpilicueta in the 62nd minute, but investigations now suggest the injury is more serious than first thought.
The Englishman could reportedly need knee surgery which could mean he misses the World Cup.
James’ absence will be a blow to both Chelsea and England as the Englishman is seen as a key player for both club and country.
England have many options at right-back but James’ all-round ability has seen Gareth Southgate favor him over others.
England also face the prospect of being without Kyle Walker at the World Cup as the Manchester City right-back undergoes groin surgery.
With Walker and James both potentially absent, Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold are likely to compete for the right-back spot.
Reece James would be a huge failure for both Chelsea and England
Reece James has impressed for Chelsea since breaking into the first-team under former manager Frank Lampard.
The 22-year-old has proved that his all-round skills make him perfectly suited to the role of modern-day full-back.
While James loves to charge forward and create chances for his team, he is also more than adept on the defensive. He has two goals and two assists in 11 games in all competitions so far this season.
The Englishman was also used on the right side of a three-man central defense by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, where he also shone.
James started England’s final UEFA Nations League game against Germany on 27 September. He got an assist in that match and also won five of nine ground duels.
It is quite obvious that if he misses the World Cup he will be a huge failure for Chelsea and for England as well.
